Lighting show highlights new technology and opportunity for Christchurch

June, 2012

I’ve just returned from the Frankfurt Light and Building Trade Show where the new opportunities for Christchurch lighting in the re-build were clear for all to see.

The advances in LED lighting means that businesses can now get the same amount of light intensity out of an LED as they can out of a standard bulb. This means that as Christchurch rebuilds, the city can now take advantage of these far more fuel-efficient alternatives that will last three times longer.

Christchurch can take advantage of this more than any other city because the fittings needed for LED lighting are more expensive than others. But this pays for itself many times over once the lighting is in place. Now that Christchurch is in a re-build phase, it’s the perfect opportunity to introduce these fittings and reap all the benefits.

The size of the Frankfurt show was breathtaking. There were about 15 stadiums full of lights and fittings. But one thing I couldn’t help notice was that while there was some amazing quality on show, there were also some less impressive fittings and bulbs.

That’s one thing Cantabrians need to watch. If you do decide to buy into the new LED technology, you need to make sure you are buying quality, because there are a number of sub standard alternatives out there. Thankfully the major companies have come together to create a standard that will identify the quality of the product.

While the show was fantastic, I can’t say it blew me away. That’s nothing against the organisers, but because New Zealand is a world leader when it comes to lighting design and a willingness to use new technology. But the advancement of LED lighting was amazing to see. Christchurch, more than any other New Zealand city, now has the opportunity to take advantage of it.
