Jesus Christ Superstar - Rotorua Boys High School

October, 2012

This project was a special one for me because it involved teaching, which is another love of mine. Every year I come together with a group of professionals to put on a stage show for a secondary school in New Zealand.

This team includes everyone from a director, choreographer to a design team. We put the production together with the help of students from the school hosting the event. I had two helpers this year who were great to work with. They were enthusiastic and keen to learn. I'm happy to say that many students who have helped me with lighting design from secondary schools have ended up with careers in the lighting industry.

I've always had a passion for teaching. I used to be a guest lecturer at Otago University, but got so busy with my consulting that I had little time to dedicate towards it.

The beauty of showing students through this annual project is the ability to show them the practical side of lighting design. It's a bit like riding a bike. I can tell them exactly what to do, and explain all the theory, but until they try it out and see the final product, they won't learn.

My love of teaching is the ability to impart my knowledge to others. I intend to revisit it when I find the time!!!

This project with Rotorua Boys' High was another major success. The show was spectacular and a credit to all the students who played a part.
